My students need reading intervention materials to help enhance their reading abilities.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My fifth grade students typically read on a second or third grade level when they come to my classroom.
My kids are amazing young minds who unfortunately, come from a high poverty social environment.
Though faced with daily turmoil and struggle, these students are full of potential and possibility. My campus deals with a lack of parental involvement, high mobility rates, and an elevated amount of truancy. These factors have helped to create some tremendous gaps in the students' reading abilities. They struggle greatly with decoding unfamiliar words, reading with appropriate fluency, and display little to no reading comprehension of what they have read. For these reasons, students cannot successfully transition from learning to read, to reading to learn.
Students who are successful at reading fluency and comprehension are able to transfer those skills into other subject areas like math, science, and even in real world situations. My students do not read at grade level, and they are in desperate need of severe reading intervention. The materials requested are designed to address key skills like determining the main idea, making inferences and drawing conclusions, identifying the key elements of a story's plot, and determining cause and effect relationships. I selected these materials after researching our campus' standardized test scores. We will be given an hour every day to administer in-depth RTI, and I will be using these materials during that time to help reinforce the concepts that students are lacking. The comprehension and intervention materials that I am requesting will allow me to provide specific intervention to our students daily.
With these materials, I will be able to address target areas and specific skills with my students, and help to bridge the gaps in their reading skills.
Bridging these gaps before they leave elementary school will make their transition into secondary education so much easier. They will take with them a strong reading foundation. The ability to read is something that must be fought for in our society. I want to revolutionize the reading ability of my students!
