My school is highly diverse with students ranging from very transient learners to learners who have lived in our district their whole lives. We have over 44% low income students and a large non English-speaking/English as a second language population. Many of my students have never read an entire book cover to cover. Most self-proclaim when entering my class that they hate reading. Every year my job is to turn those difficult to reach students into passionate readers who thrive in my classroom.
My classroom inspires a love of reading.
I want students to look forward to coming into my room, full of relevant, engaging book titles and I want to hear from other teachers that they are reading my books when they finish their work, instead of getting on their technology. If I can reach one student that hates reading, and turn them into a "can't put this book down" student than I feel my year has been a success. My job is not simply to help them pass a state test- it is to create a lifetime learner/reader.
My Project
My classroom revolves around reading. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Students come to me for a reading intervention class. They do not love to read, heck they do not even like it - not one bit, not at all.
My sole purpose in my class it to bring life to those non readers in the classroom.
I need them to come to me every day excited about what is about to happen. The best chance I have at reaching this group of students is through quality book choices. Currently, I have one copy of these books and the students argue over them! Having multiple copies would allow for ALL of my students to have access to books they want to read! The best part of this series it the publisher provides FREE audiobooks! My students struggle with comprehension - having the ear buds to listen while they read aloud will help them in so many ways to become better readers!
