Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Kindergarten is a crucial year to build a foundation for learning. Students learn A LOT in a very short time. My students are a diverse group of children whose love for exploration and joy for learning have always been my inspiration to continue to develop as an educator.
We are a Title One School with students who are diverse both economically and culturally.
I am seeking to learn developmentally appropriate practices and strategies that can help lead my students to independent learners with a life-long love for learning. "The lesson you teach today is not confined to the walls of your classroom. Once it is implanted in the heart and mind of a child, it can change the world" (Author Unknown).
My Project
This institute will provide me with ideas about teaching writing to kindergartners. The infusion of developmentally appropriate writing practices and strategies will empower my young students to discover the art of writing!
In a world of technical revolution where communication has been transformed by text messaging, social media and texting jargon; it is imperative that my young students learn to write narratives, persuasive text, informational text, and develop their own writing voice.
During the institute, I will learn to use mentor texts to enhance the level of written student expression. Use interactive writing and other components of balanced literacy to scaffold writing skills. Learn strategies to foster independence and a growth mindset in student writers.
Additionally, I'll have the opportunity to collaborate with educators from around the globe as we study curricula, share ideas, collaborate, revitalize our thinking, and most importantly, learn skills and strategies that encourage our students to engage in literate lives through writing.
By attending this writing workshop, I hope to inspire my students to discover the art of writing and see themselves as future authors, just like some of their favorites - Mo Willems, Judy Blume, Ezra Jack Keats, Pam Munoz-Ryan and Shel Silverstein.
