This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from Fort Wayne. I love the cultural diversity they bring into the classroom. They speak several different languages.
Most of them are from socio-economic poor areas that qualifies them for free lunch.
Reading is difficult when there has not been a strong foundation laid from the beginning. We spend a lot of time in remediation. However, my students are committed to learn which has brought them to a charter school.
This experience should enable them to have a better education and a better future.
My Project
I have embarked on a challenge to teach students to enjoy the process of reading through the creation of a Book Nook.
We have a mandatory forty-five minute a day reading block.
Students are required to spend a portion of that time in silent reading. I want them to see this experience as something enjoyable and not view it as a task they have to do.
I have created a book nook with special seating, books, rugs, lighting, and other accessories that create a warm atmosphere to encourage reading. I believe these materials will make a difference in the students" experience.
