Help me give my students an up-to-date reference section in their school library media center. We need new record books, almanacs, animal encyclopedias, and fact books.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
“If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book.” – J.K. Rowling
In my position as Library Media Specialist, I do everything in my power to help the curious minds that I encounter every day to have access to the tools and information that they need to be successful in their educational endeavors.
Despite my dedication to the students, they aren't always afforded the same advantages that other students and school districts might have. Our elementary school is almost 100 years old and is a Title I school in a low income urban area. Funding for our library media center has been decreasing, and we don't always have the tools and resources that are needed and desired by the staff and students.
However, despite the financial difficulties that many of our students and our school district deal with, these children do not let this distract from their desire to learn all they can. Furthermore, our faculty and staff are dedicated to helping our students become the best learners and people they can be. This has been proven by our school's ability to meet state educational standards and reach full accreditation.
My Project
My students need new books for their school library reference section. Our encyclopedias, almanacs and other reference books are outdated and falling apart. Even though information is readily available on the internet, sometime the amount of information is overwhelming (and not always accurate!) Being able to browse books right in front of you can help some students discover a topic for a research paper, project, or pique their interest in another way. We also need new copies of the Guinness Book of World Records. Students LOVE to look through these books, and some students have even used older versions as inspiration for trying to set their own records!
Donations to this project will greatly improve our school library by giving the students more access to information that they need.
