My students need dry erase markers to practice MLA formatted analytical writing.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Practice makes perfect...until the materials run out! Last year my students practiced writing with personalized dry erase boards (made from sheet protectors and printer paper) so much that they dried out all of the markers in a matter of weeks.
My students are vibrant, hardworking 12th graders who are fast approaching the college admissions process.
However, many of my students will be coming to me 4-5 years behind their more affluent peers. Coming from an under-resourced school in a low-income immigrant community, they need every resource and opportunity they can get to practice and master the writing skills necessary to get into and achieve in college.
My classroom uses personalized white boards to great effect. Students work individually or in pairs to construct small portions of analytical papers, using proper MLA formatting. Students practice grammar and writing every day using this resource, which leads to improved writing skills, improved analytical reading skills, and improved test scores on the ACT and other important college admissions exams. The white boards were my best way as a teacher to ensure 100% participation and quickly check the work of 20-30 students. The only limit to this activity was the seemingly short life span of our markers from all of the use they were getting!
The donation of markers will equip my classroom and my students with the resources they need to be engaged and practicing 100% of the time.
The continual practice on a white board that allows for easy fixes of minor mistakes ensures that my students' final writing products are masterpieces fit for a college classroom and, we hope, eventually, publication. Thank you!
