Our class is comprised of eight, amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.
Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.
Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction and daily living skills.
My Project
In our classroom, we have students across three different grade levels who fall all across the spectrum and are all functioning at different developmental levels. It is important for our classroom to have a wide range of materials for all of these different ages and levels.
We are requesting laminating pouches and more so that we can create reusable materials and activities that can be used year after year.
We are also requesting desktop hanging file folder holders and markers to be used in conjunction with and to store some of these materials as well as some other classroom basics to fill in gaps in our room.
If these materials are funded, this means we will be able to continue to make important educational materials for all of our students and maximize our time in future years to reuse instead of printing the same activities out. This will have a huge impact on our students this year and in future years and on their educational progress as individuals!
