Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an urban public school with over 1,000 students. The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures. There are over 15 different languages spoken in the homes of our students, including Spanish, Portuguese, Khmer, and Vietnamese. Over 60% of our students’ homes do not speak English as their primary language and 25% of our student population receives ESL services.
Our middle school is classified as a Title I school and over 80% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Our school is part of the District Reference Group "H," which is the second-lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in. Despite these economic barriers, our students strive for academic achievement. Our school community promotes our unique diversity and encourages students to reach their maximum learning potential.
My Project
Research shows that flexible seating in a classroom can increase motivation and engagement. We currently have a variety of flexible seating options in the classroom including: rustic metal chairs, stools, high-top seating, ottomans, bean bag chairs, and a couch.
I am requesting two comfortable armchairs, a sofa, 4 metal table chairs, end tables, and portable work tables for the classroom in an effort to create a new, clean, and comfortable environment for students to return to.
My students love completing activities in our current flexible seating arrangements and new chairs/sofas will create an opportunity for more students to access a comfortable spot to work. These additional seating choices will be paired with previously funded items to create a comfortable work environment for my students. In this space students can read, annotate articles, complete research, collaborate on assignments, and much more!
I have already witnessed the positive impact that flexible seating has had in my classroom and I hope to provide my students with something new that they may have never seen in a classroom. Students access our meeting spaces on a daily basis and constantly talk about how much they enjoy our classroom setting. Whenever we are able to return to our classrooms, I hope this project will further develop a space where students feel comfortable, motivated, connected, and valued.
