My students need 2 whiteboards to replace the 50-year old chalkboard currently taking up a whole wall of their classroom!
My students could be depressed. I would forgive them. Our school is in a low-income neighborhood filled with industrial businesses and cracked sidewalks. But my kids walk in with optimism. They know their physical neighborhood doesn't define them.
They refuse to be limited by their surroundings.
However, it would be great if we could give them the supplies and equipment they need to succeed. Supplies that aren't dog-eared and falling apart, and equipment that isn't older than their parents.
My students rise to any occasion. They've lived through things I can't even imagine and still come to class with a smile on their faces. I want to help them as much as I can, by giving them access to rigorous curriculum, essential technology, and reflective personal development.
It's 2018. But you wouldn't know it looking at my classroom. The chalkboard hung up along one whole side of my room has been there since 1967. It's hard to use its surface for much of anything, and papers fall right off. I'm known as the "poster teacher." I write up directions, checklists, and steps for projects. My special education and English learner students have told me they really appreciate my use of visual aids.
I need more room to hang the posters that help so many of my students!
I know what you're thinking, why not just use the wall, but the walls are covered with this paint and concrete that make posters fall right off. I usually have to hot glue things on the wall, and that doesn't allow me to move the posters around to focus on what we're currently learning.
My students deserve technology from the 20th century. I know we are living in the 21st century, but whiteboards have been around for some time now, and yet, we do not have one. I am requesting two! My students need a place where I can write notes, hang their work, and put some posters up. It's a pretty low-tech solution, but sometimes the simplest solutions are the best!
