Rethinking the Library: Help Design a Space That Fosters Creativity!
Help me give my students the creative learning space they deserve! The Storage cabinet will provide space to store makerspace projects, and the flexible seats give students of all ages a comfortable place to work during class.
I teach 9 different grade levels of students, from Kindergarten to 8th grade, they are all wonderful, curious kids. We are in an urban setting, where nearly 50% of students receive either free or reduced lunch. In the library, students have time to experience traditional library lessons, like how to navigate a library, and how to check out a book. They also have time to learn important 21st century skills like typing, using different forms of technology, and computer science.
My students, no matter their grade, are so excited by any opportunity to learn more about computers, technology, and robotics.
They are intrigued by chances like the Hour of Code, where they get to see what computer programming is like. They also love any chance they get to build and work with their hands, especially if the project involves some kind of robotics. STEM and STEAM units are always popular and help them to become better 21st Century learners!
My Project
The items listed will provide all students in my building with a space to work in that is more appropriate for a library today. During my classes students build, program robots, and work in online classes all the time, I want to give them a space to work in that reflects this type of learning. The bean bags and floor seats will provide more options for seating while students are building or working. The robot mouse and botley provide ways for students to work collaboratively in our class time. They will learn about programming which will help them as they get older and enter computer science classes. Also, because students come only one time a week, the storage table will give us room to store ongoing projects and supplies for those projects.
Libraries are changing to become places that help students explore more than just books - they are places that help create the culture of creativity within a school.
The items listed will help provide the perfect space for this in our library!
