My students really want to be proficient at science by the end of the year and the only thing holding them back is the lack of supplies to perform experiments and get hands-on with the topics we will be covering.
My students are Native American students from an Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
Our school is high in school pride but low in funding. All of my students qualify for free lunches. The middle school is the smallest section of the school and gets the least funding so getting supplies for science is hard. There is a large emphasis on reading and math and little on the other essential subjects that enrich life. I have taken stock of all of my science materials and most are so old or out of date that it is hard to work with them.
My Project
My students will use these materials, dissection kits, anatomy models, and garden kits, as we go through the second semester of the school year. As we learn about plants and animals, my students will use these materials to get a more hands-on approach to the topic. My students would like to do dissections of animals and study the life cycle of plants!
Donations to this project will help the students in my class by providing them with materials that we do not have at the moment.
Access to these kinds of materials will better prepare them for high school and post secondary education. Some might even be inspired to want to be scientists!
