Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are amazing! They are a diverse group of learners from a variety of backgrounds. Though our school is Title I, meaning that over 87% of our students qualify for the free/reduced price meal program based on the economic statuses of their families, my students strive to do their very best each and every day.

In addition, many of my students are speakers of other languages and maybe the only English speaker in their household.

While this may be a challenge, my students face that challenge head-on and excel in every way.

Despite the challenges they may face, my students maintain academic excellence year after year, as evidenced by their outstanding test scores and classroom productivity.

I am inspired by my students on a daily basis and do my best to inspire them back with a learning environment in which they can continue to thrive.

My Project

Many of our amazing students have expressed that they want to restore their butterfly garden which was devastated by Hurricane Irma. By Incorporating STEAM strategies with a focus on science, our students will learn about the plants and insects needed to restore their garden outside the classroom with hands-on experiences through flexible groupings.

I have requested butterfly nurseries, extra caterpillars, and bugs & insects learning centers for learning about insects and their need in the butterfly garden as well as clipboards for data-taking from observations to help restore the butterfly garden which was devastated by Hurricane Irma.

Students will participate in hands-on learning experiences outside the classroom through science to maintain the garden. They will add caterpillars and will observe them. They will learn about metamorphosis and make predictions. They will watch butterflies and other insects that are needed and other insects that could cause problems.

An afterschool gardening club will be established to maintain the garden by adding special plants for the caterpillars and more. Special gardening tools and the pitchers requested will be used to them grow.

Community volunteers will be invited to help nurture the garden too. Painted rocks will also be added for additional beauty.

Students will have opportunities to draw or paint with paper and paints using the clipboards in the garden. They may relax by practicing meditation and calming techniques on the big pillows requested if needed.

I hope you consider helping restore our butterfly garden devastated by Hurricane Irma and help bring learning experiences out of the classroom and to bring beauty and a place of tranquility.
