Restoring Life Skills Program for Students with Special Needs

My Students

Our building services students from local school districts, both urban and rural areas. It is a special education program for students post-high school, ages 18 to 26. The focus of our program is helping our students to become as independent as possible. We teach skills in vocational training, adult daily living, getting around the community, social skills, and leisure recreational skills.

Our program and our students, is very unique in helping students with special needs become functioning adults in their community.

My students come from an array of different backgrounds and all have special needs. I have students who struggle with learning disabilities, autism, cognitive impairments, emotional impairments, as well as some who are health impaired, but these struggles encourage them to push through and meet their full potential.

My Project

I teach students with varying abilities, daily living skills in the kitchen and strive for more independence in each of them. Students find recipes, plan the grocery shopping list, grocery shop, and cook the recipes they find each week. My students best learn these skills by cooking, creating, and learning in a hands-on environment. The hope is that by the end of the semester or school year, students have learned many prepping/cooking skills needed for them to live on their own or provide for themself in their family's home.

Our classroom kitchens lack in many quality, basic kitchen supplies which are needed to perform our cooking skills proficiently.

Our current cooking equipment is unsafe to use and without new supplies, students will not be able to move forward with gaining their independence.
