Restorative Resources

My students need resources for a restorative classroom - the resources will help them focus their time and re-engage in their classwork: coloring supplies, basic school supplies, sensory tools, classroom dividers, posters with positive expressions.

My Students

Our students come from a variety of different backgrounds, as we are one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Minnesota! Our school is innovating and exploring new ways to restructure our community and support students, so that we can further hear their needs and voices.

Understanding the needs of our students is crucial so that they are better connected to our school, neighborhood, and general community.

Through the development of positive relationships, our students can focus their attention on learning and succeeding in school.

My Project

These resources will allow the classroom to follow a more restorative approach. Allowing our students to hone in on issues with a restorative lens empowers them to transform conflicts in a way that builds stronger relationships with the adults in our school.

For example, as of now the walls of the classroom are bare - positive posters/positive wall art will reinforce what is being taught, in a restorative and positive manner.

Another example - some of my students have trouble speaking about serious topics while looking me in the eyes, molding clay will permit them to hold that conversation without being intimidated by the one-on-one conversation that is happening.

Specifically, sensory items and art supplies (which include: the mini Buddha board, puzzles, coloring books, colored pencils, fidget spinners and stress balls, origami tools, pencils, and markers) will allow students to cool down from a conflict that may have come up; dividers and foam sound-proofing panels will allow us to have private, meaningful conversations about what is happening in their lives; various seating choices (including bean bag chairs, and an adjustable lap desk) to create an inviting space and to keep our students comfortable; and simple school supplies (such as folders, notebooks, highlighters, pens, and backpacks). Snacks are needed for hungry students and a storage container protects food from critters. Clorox wipes keep the room clean.

Objects that have been traditionally impactful for adults, such as meditation cushions and yoga mats will find their way into this classroom to help my students the same way it helps adults! If they need to take a minute for themselves - that is encouraged so it will help them refocus, and re-engage in their work. Headphones allow students to do interactive work on the computers.
