Celebrating Black History Month

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My school is in a low-economic area with very limited resources. It serves students grades Pre-K-5th. More than 90% of our students are on a free or reduced price lunch program.

“Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand.” We need to get our students more involved in their education, but it's hard to do when budgets are cut.

Students learn more and get excited about learning when they get to do the experiments instead of watching them.

The kids are wonderful. Many are trying to rise above the challenges in their life. These kids still look at education as fun and drink in the learning. They are always asking about how things work or why events happen. We need to have more experiences in the classroom to make up for the loss of field experiences that these students need and thrive on.

My Project

My students love being able to print their writing and work in color. My school only have black ink copiers, so I have a printer in my room so students can print their precious writing in color. We need more ink to continue to do so. They also wanted to read "Auggie and Me" after reading Wonder. They are looking forward to hearing this story. It would be great to have my own copy to reread year after year. Post-It notes, Expo markers, and pens are needed to restock my supplies that are running low. Students love being able to show their math problems in different color ink. I wanted to add a Sphero to our maker space. I would love to have students be able exploring coding using this device.

Many of my students come from Hispanic backgrounds and love the game of soccer.

They currently use a volleyball at recess to play soccer, so they will be excited to actually with a real soccer ball. Hopefully other students will catch onto the game as well.
