I have a wonderful group of 23 first graders from a rural area in central Arkansas. It is a diverse group of personalities and backgrounds that include ELLs. Greater than 50% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our students are from military families, have special needs, and most importantly, are awesome kids who are eager to learn!
My first graders are brimming with enthusiasm and excitement for learning, life, friends, and interests.
We jump into projects with both feet, make big plans, work at a breakneck pace, and don't miss a thing!
My Project
I use my classroom treasure box to motivate my students to do their reading homework. In exchange for devoting 4 nights a week to reading, students get to choose a prize out of the treasure box.
When it comes to reading, the nine months of first grade are arguably the most important in a student's schooling; therefore, I pull out all the stops!
I try and appeal to what motivates anyone and everyone in first grade to keep them reading daily. These simple trinkets motivate my students to practice their reading, which will improve their reading skill and hopefully develop of love of reading.
