Our Pacific Northwest high school qualifies for Title I funding, we have a widely diverse population, and terrific students with many struggles. Over 65% of our students receive free and reduced rate lunch. Fourteen percent of our students are designated "English Language Learners." In one math classroom alone, students speak Arabic, Spanish, Tagalog, Mandinka, Fijian, Lao, Amharic, Chinese and English.
Our students are full of passion and doing their best to learn during this crisis with limited resources.
Many students are walking to school for meals everyday during the COVID-19 crisis. Students can pick up a sack lunch and food for breakfast the next day.
While they come to school each day for their meal, many have no food at home, or during the weekends. Many of our families will not receive a stimulus check or qualify for unemployment because of their citizenship status. They need help beyond our basic nutrition program.
My Project
Right now, our students are home, many taking care of siblings or just home alone while their parents are working. The school provides breakfast and lunch Monday thru Friday to those who can walk to the school. However, many families do not have enough on the weekends. With our population of students, many will not receive stimulus checks. They will be among the first to lose work, and among those who will be at higher risk doing "essential" jobs so they can pay rent. Several items on the list are not food, but hygiene supplies that are not covered by food stamps.
These items will help make some of this time easier, so that students have a better chance of learning during the pandemic.
Thank you so much for your support. Our school is a terrific community. I see so many inspirational stories of my students and their families everyday.
