A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students love to participate, learn and experiment. They come from a low-income under-served part of Los Angeles. 93% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school is predominantly Latino, with a smaller population of African American and Filipino students.
My students love to learn by doing.
They make hypotheses and connections, do experiments and report back on the results. They understand the engineering cycle, and they work hard to continuously improve their results.
Most of all, my students are hard workers. They always impress me by how resourceful they are. They know that college and career readiness are their goals, and they are ready to change the odds in the inner city.
My Project
This last year, our MESA engineering class took 1st place in the city and 2nd place in the state for our projects. It was a tremendous accomplishment, but competing at that level also depleted our supplies. The engineering cycle requires students to make mistakes and that means using up our materials.
We need basic supplies to make our new engineering projects.
This include glue-guns and glue sticks, crazy glue, marbles, wires, servo motors, breadboards, cable ties and zipties. These will help us create prosthetic arms, rube gilder machines and arduino-coded robotics. We will keep these supplies well organized, but also open for all students to take as they please, so that they can learn by doing.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
