Help us with manipulatives to learn and play! Our school is in the southernmost part of our county, separated by the rest of the county by a large lake- this very much isolates our community. A number of our students are the third generation to attend our school and 80% of our students participate in the free and reduced lunch program, and 35% of our students are English Language Learners. But don't let those numbers scare you! Our students are compassionate, smart, hardworking, and absolutely love to come to school.
My classroom needs movement props and manipulatives for the younger classes, items to help the students understand music as they explore their bodies.
I'm looking for items such as ribbon streamers, stretchy bands, a large parachute (big enough for every student to have a handle), hand puppets and spot markers (to help us learn about safe movement space). While I have some of these items, I don't have a large enough set for every child to participate. Thank you for your consideration!
My Project
My younger students in grades K-2 love movement activities as a way to learn in music class. Movement causes the brain to produce endorphins that increase a child's energy level and their ability to learn. In addition, movement and musical activities that include cross lateral movement are especially important for brain development in children. Movement activities also allow children to improve their balance and coordination.
Donations to this project will allow my students to fully participate in movement lessons to enhance learning.
Parachute activities encourage teamwork, enhance coordination and effectively teach students about musical form. Ribbon streamers allow students to move independently while demonstrating changes that occur in musical selections- ie, fast and slow, high and low, and melodies that move up and down. Stretchy bands encourage children to work together to demonstrate a steady beat. Finally, poly spot markers will encourage more flexible seating options in my classroom.
