My Students

Every day I see my students working hard to get good grades and achieve their goals. Some of my students have many struggles that they need to overcome on a daily basis.

My students love to read, but don't always have the opportunities to read and purchase books they want.

For some, it's a struggle to put food on the table so school supplies and books are put on the back burner. I believe every child deserves an education and a chance to read extraordinary and remarkable books.

My Project

We are always trying to teach our students about different cultures and about having empathy for others. The book “How Dare the Sun Rise” by Sandra Uwiringiyimana will teach just that. It is an amazing book about Uwiringiyimana's struggles in the Republic of Congo and her family's journey to America. The author is a very inspiring, strong African American woman and I feel this book could be very influential to my students.

I want to help create empathic readers who can experience cultures other than their own.

I am a physical education teacher at my school, and I read this book and was inspired to get copies for my students. I collaborated on this project with my school's literacy coach. She will have these books in her library and will use them with her readers for many years to come. Our students will become "responsible, resourceful readers".
