Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
While my students come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and neighborhoods, they have many similarities; the most significant is their desire to strive for excellence in everything they do. This characteristic is a building block for learning if we have the opportunity to develop it. One issue they all have in common is the lack of resources available in the community.
We are a Title I school where the majority of the students are English Language Learners and come from predominately Spanish speaking homes.
Many of our students are newcomers to the United States, and many have experienced trauma in their short lifetimes. They live in a community far from libraries or other educational resources within walking distance for our students. Despite the lack of access to outside areas, my students have been able to develop a love of learning and cooperation.
My Project
It is hard for me to watch the majority of my students feel shut out from reading lessons because they are English learners, struggling readers, or students suffering from trauma. Life has challenged them already. I hope that this project will make school an environment where they can thrive and feel good about themselves.
Since the majority of my students are not able to respond to reading with writing, I am giving them art to use as a tool for responding to reading so they are able to be engaged in classroom learning.
This project will provide paper, paints, clay, etc. for my students.
A student that is a struggling reader is more likely to respond to reading through art than in writing. With art, my students will still be able to respond to reading while they become fluent readers.
