Responding to Innovation

My students need an interactive response system to allow for full participation of all students with varying communication and intellectual abilities.

Mr. Clough Summit Learning Center
Crestwood, IL Grades 9-12

Being able to answer is the difference between needing help and being independent. I am a special education teacher for a high school classroom and I support many various subjects in this classroom including literature, government, math, and basic skills. As a special education school we try to service our students specific to their individual learning styles. 94% of the students in this school are provided with free or reduced breakfast and lunch in accordance to financial status. As we try to realize the physical and emotional needs of our students it is also important to make gains in their educational needs as well.

Many of the students at our school come to us with varying abilities. Whether it be motor or verbal difficulties, all students deserve the chance to answer in class. Some students get overlooked because they cannot verbalize answers, either out of fear of being wrong or of an inability to communicate at all. These students still are intelligent and deserve the chance to demonstrate their knowledge. Also, how is a teacher to realize if the class as a whole has difficulty with a particular strategy.

One solution I have come across are the interactive response boards. The interactive response boards allow for students of all abilities to answer questions using a numerical keypad. It allows the teacher after the class to print out a report that documents which students answered specific questions incorrectly. This allows the teacher to go back and reteach the students specific strategies. Utilizing these response boards allows a teacher to spend less time reteaching entire lessons and allows for teachers to focus on specific skills, lessons, or components.

I truly believe in my students, but I cannot achieve their fullest potential alone. You can be that difference, please donate today so that we can provide a better learning opportunity for these students. Together we can make the difference. Help me reach them and keep them actively participating in class. Together we will know no boundaries. I thank you in advance, as I know my students will thank you too. You are the change that allows teachers like me to dream of a better educational system. Thank you!
