My Students

Our school is a diverse community; we have a high enrollment of non English speaking students, a dash of working low middle class, and well over half that are disadvantaged economically. Many of our students are from broken homes, being raised by grandparents or foster parents, and often move from one school to another within any given school year.

They need an emotional and physical break from the many upheavals some of them face.

A number of our students do not want to learn, they see from the people around them that it is not worth the effort of studying and striving to do better.

I believe that if they could see that the people that teach them want the best for them, want them to succeed, want them to do better.

My Project

I have created a LEGO Club for our school, however, I had over 120 responses to participate and not enough kits to give each student to build every week. I would like for ALL the students that responded to have a chance to participate.

Students at our school would highly benefit from an after school club that would give them the chance to socialize with their peers.

Many of them do not have access to after school activities. I wanted a club that enabled them to have fun while learning. Studies show that LEGO building contributes to lateral and critical thinking skills, teaches patience and spacial awareness.

LEGO is a back door learning experience for children that do not have the wish to attend school or attempt to learn while there. For some of our students, just getting through the day is enough. I want to change their perspective that school is drudgery and not a fun place to be.

If they have fun, they will want to learn.
