Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My bilingual third grade students truly are amazing! There is a combination of native English and native Spanish speakers in our classroom. We have a range of students with speech and language needs, special education students, and gifted and talented students. They work hard and try their best every day. They come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and cultures. Our caring classroom environment supports one another and respects everyone as equal.
We have students with special needs and more than half of our students come from low-income households.
My Project
Whole group instruction occurs when the entire class is together on the carpet. Well-defined areas clarify student expectations.
Having a carpet with a clearly defined space would help students to learn to respect their physical boundaries and the boundaries of their peers, along with the reduction of florescent lighting to help decrease anxiety.
The classroom is a safe and calm place where students can call their home-base. Our students collaborate with their teammates at their tables and on the carpet, and have assigned teammates and partners for one month at a time before rotating. A well-thought out physical arrangement in our classroom with this carpet would benefit not only students with special education needs, but all students still learning their boundaries and respecting their peers' personal spaces. The circles would also allow students for a variety of possibilities for flexible seating arrangements as well.
Providing this predictability has a calming effect on students so they can focus on learning. Also reducing the amount of fluorescent lighting would help create a more calm and relaxing atmosphere. A decrease in anxiety typically translates into a decrease in misbehavior as well. Both the carpet with well-defined spaces and the reduction of florescent lighting would be conducive for learning for all students.
