My students need small-group nonfiction reading comprehension skill building sets, fluency card banks, multiplication flip books, and a fractions activity center.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I'm a Special Education Resource Room teacher in East Flatbush, Brooklyn who teaches a group of 35 students with disabilities in first through eighth grades. My school is a Title I school, and approximately 97% of its students receive free lunch.
Throughout the school day, I pick up students and bring them to the Resource Room for small group academic intervention in reading, writing, and math.
I teach six year olds through thirteen year olds, both tiny students and students who are taller than me!
After nine years of being a second grade teacher, I now have a new title, new responsibilities, and a new classroom! The room I moved into earlier this year is a former second grade classroom. The classroom I inherited was chock full of second grade materials--EXACTLY what I didn't need! I have plenty of those!
My Project
Due to budget restraints, my school was not able to supply me with additional materials to accommodate my younger students or my older students. I am requesting small-group, nonfiction, reading comprehension skill building sets and fluency card banks at various levels to help build the reading comprehension and fluency rates of all of my students, from the youngest to the oldest.
I am also requesting multiplication flip books and a fractions activity center to reinforce math concepts that many of my students struggle with. These materials will be a tremendous help to my visual and tactile learners!
By helping to place these reading comprehension and fluency kits, multiplication flip books, and fractions activity center into my classroom, you will be providing students with disabilities many opportunities for more in-depth and hands-on instruction in literacy and math.
