This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The days of having students sit quietly at desks lined up in a row listening to lectures are long gone. My students thirst for hands-on learning. They enjoy working with their peers, participating in class projects, and being creative.
Often times, my students don't come to school with the tangible tools they need to learn.
When these tools are provided, they thrive academically and socially. My school is located in a low-income area, and many of the students live within walking distance of the school. Many of them are responsible for getting themselves up and ready for school without the assistance of an adult.
There are times when this causes them to be late for school, but they do the best they can to catch up with the activities they missed. These same students have trouble getting the materials they need to complete classroom assignments and projects. I don't take off points for not having materials. I do my best to provide each of my students with the tools they need to ensure equity and fairness.
My Project
Some of my students live in a homeless shelter. Because of their living situations, they do not always have the basic tools they need to prepare for school. They lack items such as the requested toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, socks, combs, and brushes. Having basic items will help them stay focused in class.
Living in transitional housing is stressful for my students.
If their basic needs are met, it takes some of the stress away from them. Having what they need will not only help their self esteem, but it will discourage other students from teasing them. With these basic supplies on hand, all of my students will have the opportunity to reach their maximum potential.
