Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 4th grade at a public school in Chicago. Ninety-two (92%) of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Twenty-eight (28) of my 31 students are English Language Learners. Our building is an old Catholic school, and we are on the parish "campus.” Because of this, we have no playground to speak of - just a parking lot. Nevertheless, when we go out for recess, the students want to play. It is very sad to see my students playing soccer with an empty water bottle or rock! The girls, instead of doing something physical, stand around in groups and talk. The students would love to jump rope or start their own game of football or soccer. Therefore, I am requesting recess equipment for my class. This will benefit the students in several ways. First, it will give my students much-needed exercise, as they only have gym once a week. Second, it will provide my girls with fun physical activities, as most of them feel uncomfortable playing competitive games with the boys. Third, recess equipment will allow my students to play games and share common interests with their classmates. I will also use this equipment for team-building activities, such as kickball.
I am asking for things I really think my students will use (based on observation and student requests): soccer balls, four square balls, jump ropes, a football, bases (for kickball), and Frisbees. I have bought several jump ropes and a football. Unfortunately, however, I do not have the resources to purchase enough. I truly believe that these resources will enhance my students' school year and provide them with much-needed exercise.
