Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a college counselor for my high school for the last 10 years. I came into this position after leaving my previous position at UPS as a sort manager, managing close to 150 personnel. When offered this position I was asked that my main job task was to create a college-going culture within the high school that had about 30% of the student body seeking higher education., let alone any student looking to attend college outside the city. Since then the number of student attending higher education has tripled, with many of my students seeking top tier universities outside Houston and Texas. More than 70% of my students are considered low income or middle class low income causing them to not qualify for federal grants and pressuring parents to pay for all their college expenses.
My students are now at the verge of expanding their minds even more by seeking summer camps of their interests.
Many are joining after school programs that encourage college and help decorate their resume so they can become good candidates for their college applications.
My Project
By obtaining a laptop I will be able to attend professional developments and learn how to use certain programs/software that facilitate the college-going application process (Common app, FAFSA / TASFA, ApplyTexas). The professional developments are usually provided free of charge but do not provide the electronic devices to fully support the Professional Development. College Board, Naviance, and NACAC are key profession developments I will be planning to attend. These organizations provide many resources my students can take advantage of and help them become more competitive college applicants. The acquisition of a laptop to my resources will enable to learn additionally and help open new doors to my student in helping them find the right college at an affordable manner.
