My Students
I work in a low income school district that does not have all the readily available technology for everyone. We are encouraged to incorporate technology into our lessons, but when we don't have the necessary materials, it makes that style of teaching difficult.
My students are creative, multi-faceted learners who love interacting with technology.
Many of them do not get the opportunity to use technology at home because it's not available to them. We are asking students to interact more and more with items that they may not be able to afford. As a special education teacher, I see how much technology makes a difference in these students lives especially when traditional learning styles do not best meet the needs of my students.
Unfortunately, not every teacher has a projector to use in their classroom and no one has an interactive whiteboard.
My Project
Currently, the students in my classroom are seated at two rectangular tables. This makes lessons difficult for part of the group because they always have their backs to the board. In order to watch the lesson on the board and copy down any work, students need to constantly turn around and sit at an uncomfortable angle. At times, this can cause the students to miss a piece of information or struggle to keep up. The students facing the board have the distinct advantage in being able to see all the work and be ahead of the others.
Since I work with special education students, pacing and timing of lessons is everything.
My students already work at different speeds and by having to constantly turn around to get the work and then turn again to transfer it to their papers makes staying on task a challenge that many already face. By having a kidney shaped table and matching chairs, all students would be facing the board and would be better able to keep up with the lesson. This would also provide me the opportunity to sit with all of the students and reach them equally. Currently I am either at the board or have to sit in a spot where I cannot effectively work with all students at the same time. I would also be able to maximize the space in the small classroom that I work in by providing more access to resources for students. This is currently a challenge with the tables that I have as they only fit in a certain spot in the room.
