My students are amazing! Many of them have persevered through the challenging situations that life has thrown at them. They are truly my heroes! Our school is a therapeutic day school for special needs students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Students typically attend our school due to challenging behaviors in general education buildings. These behaviors are often physically or verbally aggressive, either towards staff members and/or students and themselves.
Most students that come to our school have typically experienced traumatic events in their lives and/or suffer from mental health disabilities.
The goal of our classroom is to determine effective interventions so that students can transition back to their general education settings.
My Project
My students learn best by doing! This year we have been doing hands on research projects during our reading instruction to bring more science and social studies into our classroom. This has increased the students skills in the areas of science, social studies, social skills, art, and reading comprehension. It has quickly become the best part of my student's day! The research projects we have completed so far have been about Black History Month, Weather, Thanksgiving, Christmas Around the World, Dinosaurs, and more. This spring we will be completing a research project on insects. Our research project will include hands on activities such as observing the life cycle of a butterfly, watching ants dig tunnels in an ant farm, and so much more!
Your donation would provide my students with safety goggles and lab coats to wear while completing their research projects.
This will not only protect their clothing and eyes, but it will make the students feel like real researchers and increase their engagement in the project.
