My students need an Acer Chromebook so that they can spend time researching (reading!) about science topics that interest them.
Can you imagine reading at a second grade level in fifth grade? Think about the effect this has on your self-esteem and self-efficacy. I have several students reading far below grade level, and many of them have already shut down. I combat this by making reading fun and at their level.
I teach fifth grade at an urban Title I school in North Carolina.
Well over half of my students read below grade level. Some have learning disabilities, others are learning English as a Second Language and many are simply reluctant learners. My students MUST leave fifth grade reading proficiently or the chances that they will learn how to read are unlikely. Middle school classes are shorter, and most middle school teachers are not trained to teach reading. As a certified Reading Specialist, I know I can get my students where they need to be but I need supplemental materials to get them motivated to read!
I am requesting a Acer Chromebook to supplement the technology in our classroom. During guided reading time (students read books at their instructional level with support at their own level), my students read great informational texts about topics that interest them. I always hear "I want to read more about this!". This year, I decided to capitalize on their interest by letting them research their topics. Researching is reading, and I love letting my students do any reading that interests them. I typically have six different guided reading groups per class so in order to facilitate group research we need enough technology to support all of our groups. 5th graders take an end of year test in science so it is important that they are able to spend time reading about the various subjects they will be tested on.
This project is important because one of the biggest obstacles in getting a fifth grader to read on a fifth grade level is motivation.
Many of my students have been struggling with reading since they were in kindergarten and now they HATE reading. I love to incorporate any type of reading that they are excited about because I want them to see that reading is fun and beneficial to their lives. This Chromebook would give us another way to read in a way that my students will enjoy.
