Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
John A. Walsh Elementary School has existed in the Pilsen community of Chicago since 1886. While driving up to the school the modern building stands out. The building that stands today was constructed in 1994. The school serves approximately 550 students per year that are 94% Hispanic, 4% Black, and 2% White. 93% of the students come from low-income families and about 22% are Limited English proficient. The average class size is 30 students per teacher. In the coming year, our school will become networked and give the students access to the internet. This is a great accomplishment that will help to expose our students to many more resources.
Throughout the fourth grade curriculum at Walsh Elementary School, students become engaged in research activities in a variety of subjects including Reading, Writing, and Social Studies. Projects that students are involved with include a State Research Report, a Biography Informational Writing Project, and a Native American Tribe Report. Each of these projects requires students to use encyclopedias, library books, and online research. While students have the opportunity to visit the school library, many of them cannot make it to their local library to conduct other research. Our current classroom computer is not equipped with the resources to aid the students in their research projects (current computer is running Windows 95 OS, no research software, no printer). As one of the fourth grade teachers in our school, I believe that having a newer computer with encyclopedia, word processing software, and a printer would enable the students to not only fully research their projects, but also expose them to newer technology.
