I am the media specialist at NCMS, a 6-8 school in Rocky Mount located in North Carolina. My school is labeled Title I and approximately 50 percent of our student body is on a free or reduced lunch plan. I want to update the reference section in my library. Research is such a fundamental process for all grade levels and this is what I teach when the students come in for class. I want the students to get the most up-to-date information possible, which is difficult for them when the only resources they have to choose from are copyrighted from the 1950s. I want the students to enjoy the process of researching information and that is also difficult when the materials available do not reflect what they see in everyday life, for example, some of my reference collection depicts supposedly modern age people in 60s dress. When students see in books or other materials, things that they can connect to their life, they are more willing to learn from it and go to it when they have a question. The materials that I am requesting is a new set of US history resources by Joy Hakim, The History of US. These materials will benefit the entire school. I teach classes 6-8 and I conduct research projects with all of them. These resources will also benefit the classroom teachers, because they can checkout the materials and conduct their own research projects in the classroom. Research is one of the most fundamental processes which will help create life-long learners. The resources that the students are using should reflect thier life and times.
