Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Welcome to my classroom where the students are truly one of a kind! Enter into the world of brilliant, hardworking and bubbly 12 and 13 year olds. They have spent their sixth grade year going through many changes and overcoming many challenges. Sixth grade is a hard age for any student, finding yourself in that start of Middle School while going through changes physically and mentally. The goal of my classroom is provide an area for students to feel comfortable and confident while going through changes.
The proverb "A place for everything and everything in its place" describes my classroom perfectly.
Every student has a purpose. We have a classroom where kindness, fun and sarcasm are always streaming through. In a city like Everett, it is important to have a place where students come to feel safe and for some, escape challenges they face at home. The majority of my students have recently come to the country and speak multiple languages, Haitian-Creole, Portuguese and Spanish to name a few. It is amazing to watch them be able to translate to their parents or other students while understanding the English language. Their minds are incredible.
My Project
In my classroom, I have many students who are English Language Learners. Learning ELA and Science is challenging for them. Students need to understand vocabulary and a great way to do this is by using pictures, videos and translations. For example, currently, we are working on studying the body systems in Science. It is a new unit for sixth grade this year. This has been a challenge with students who do not speak English or for other students who cannot grasp the concept that all of these systems are working inside of our body. Using computers would benefit my students to be able to use pictures for vocabulary and videos to see how the systems work. So far, go see the progress of my students in this unit has been incredible.
Students are not giving up on learning even though it has been extremely challenging!
These computers will also be used for our research projects throughout the year in sixth grade. With such a push in the Common Core for expository writing, students need to use articles as evidence and find their own research. The computers will allow them to do that. Right now, we use one laptop and one classroom computer. It is a challenge with 25 students in a class!
