Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My environmental science and chemistry students come from urban areas with serious challenges they are eager to overcome. These challenges include medical issues, language, trauma, hunger, gang and drug activity, very low income and in total, with 100% eligible for free lunch. 92% are Latino. One example of a medical challenge is asthma. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, the area these students come from is the asthma capital of the USA.
These scholars are aiming for a college education and working to overcome these very serious challenges.
They do not have the same level of access to technology to support their science education that many other students across the nation do.
I hope you will consider helping them overcome the technology gap and support their love of hands-on inquiry based learning that requires technology. These scholars are resilient, and creative, and have a lot to offer all of us. Please consider supporting them by helping close the technology gap.
My Project
Scholars will use Chromebooks to research environmental issues and communicate their knowledge to others. I plan to have students not only use the Chromebooks to gather information from websites, but also to carry out a range of other activities such as environmental simulations, creation of informational brochures, and gathering data about the environment.
Chromebooks would enable us to interface with Vernier data collection instruments so scholars can gather data such as carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.
This would open up the opportunity for scholars to perform authentic research, and to experience, firsthand, the practices of scientists using technology to assist them.
