My students are awesome; I currently have 23 second graders that are eager to learn about the world around them.
My school serves a working class neighborhood where many of my students come from homes where both parents work in order to provide for their families.
While all of my parents have established a sense of self-accomplishment in their children, my classroom is a vehicle for allowing my students to explore, exceed, and learn in ways that are innovative and exciting. Because most of my students do not have much exposure to technology at home, they are always eager and roused when lessons that integrate technology in the classroom are introduced. This level of excitement is overwhelming and opportunities like this must be seized when students are that thrilled to learn something new.
My Project
Greetings! During the second semester of Second Grade, students are required to learn how to do research on any given topic. The topics range from types of plants to countries around the world. With most second grade research projects, the students are required to document factual data, draw sketches of the topic, record interesting facts and write a summative paragraph or two describing what they learned about the topic. Most of our research is conducted in our school library where students work in small groups searching for books on their topic. My students enjoy all of the time spent in the library, but I would like to incorporate Internet-based research into our classrooms curriculum.
In order to enhance the learning experience with our research, we are looking to obtain a laptop computer.
With this computer, we will be able to elaborate on the information we find during the research process. For example, while students are suing textbooks to find information on their given topic, they will also have the ability to search for additional information via the Internet. The combination of both search methods will not only produce excellent results, it will also expose the students to the technological techniques that they will need as they reach higher grade levels.
