Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My second grade students attend a Title 1 school in a "concrete jungle" and have little or no empathy for reptiles. Most of the students are bilingual and need a substantial support structure to relate lessons to real life.

The school was built in the '60's in a "pod" design--which means that although the classrooms are open to each other--there are no windows or openings to natural light! Bringing the natural world into the classroom is important for the students to believe that what is being taught has relevance.

I'm focused on teaching my 7-year-olds the "bigger picture" of the interactions and balance of living things on earth. My second grade students need to develop an understanding of a reptile's habitat. A basic terrarium is the start. After sand, light, and a heater are installed, the lizards can be introduced. Their lives outside of the classroom are pretty tough, and it is important for them to witness a true respect for all life inside our walls.

No other classroom at this school has a living habitat inside. You can give my students the opportunity to be proud of their ability to develop responsibility to care for unusual creatures, and respect for the diversity of life.
