Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students would LOVE to learn about and touch and see giant reptiles up close, guided through their in-classroom learning by the wonderful and knowledgeable staff from the East Bay Vivarium in Berkeley.
My 20 Spanish-speaking Kindergarteners are a very hands-on group. I've noticed that my group this year is different from other years. Five of 20 qualify for Speech and Language services and 3 others qualify for further evaluation. Other years, I have been able to bring experiences to the classroom through reading books and talking about them; this year I find that books are not enough. Not only do some of them have limited experiences due to their families' lack of money, but in some cases, my students have difficulty attending to auditory input.
At our school, over 80% of students qualify for free and reduced price lunch. Because both parents typically work, often alternating shifts to save on childcare costs, many families have not had the experience of a trip to the zoo, the tide pools, or even to visit the local nature center.
In April we will be studying animals and their habitats in reading, social studies and writing. Many of my students' parents have expressed fear of reptiles and especially snakes. I believe that this fear will be overcome with information and positive experiences with these animals.
Please help give my students the experience of a personal visit from a giant tortoise, a boa constrictor, a huge monitor lizard, and 20 other smaller reptiles so that they can learn about animals in our world and help dispel some adults' fears with knowledge. My students will be so excited to learn more about these animals as well as write about them!
