Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have 12 amazing students in my class with varying levels of speech/language impairments as well as other developmental, learning, and emotional disabilities. My students learn and grow in different ways and range greatly in their academic levels. Having students at many different levels can make things challenging, however, my students and I adapt and modify to keep our classroom running smoothly. I provide them with alternative ways to learn, and I get the joy of seeing their "light bulb" moments. As expected with little kids, they sometimes come running up to me in excitement talking way too fast!

Even in these moments when I can't understand them, I have the opportunity to listen to their stories, their thoughts, and their feelings.

My students all have disabilities, but they have so much potential to learn and grow. I am excited to continue watching them grow. These new materials will be a huge asset to their learning process.

My Project

All of our students want to learn to play with toys and materials that represent themselves and their friends. My students are no exception to that. Our class has very few toys that represent the kids in our room and their peers. Having dolls that are not only ethnically similar to them I want them to have dolls that represent their specific adaptive equipment. My students have never seen toy dolls wearing leg braces like themselves, glasses, or even hearing aids.

This can be pivotal to them learning about and understanding their own differing abilities.

When they see toys that represent themselves, it helps build their self-esteem and see that they are an important part of our society.
