Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
These middle and high school students are amazing pupils who will all be first-generation college students. They come from all over our city and have an unbelievable amount of potential. Together, we come from diverse backgrounds but all share the common goal of graduating from high school, going to college, and implementing change in our world!
Furthermore, our programs emphasize the students helping students model and we work heavily to have our students work in teams to support each other's learning!
My Project
I support students of varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds and ensuring that they have equitable access to novels is essential for developing personal identity! Our students are barraged with visual media that often depicts flawed societal constructions and stereotypes.
In this day and age, representation matters and it is important for students to be able to see themselves in the literature they read.
These middle grades novels are written by diverse authors and inspire increased agency in students. Often our students struggle to see their point of view, experience, and history in the characters they read about, and so disengage from novels or literature as a whole. We know that a well stocked library is the first step to change that!
