I serve an incredible, diverse group of teens and tweens. We are a Title I school and our primary mission is to achieve excellence through equity.
Once a week I host an LGBTQ alliance club for a self-selected group of 7th and 8th graders, and they have mentioned that they would like to see the LGBQT section of our classroom library grow.
They have given me a number of excellent book suggestions to help ensure that our library presents a diversity of viewpoints, so that all of my students feel well represented in my classroom.
My Project
Middle school can be a challenging time for children who are on their way to becoming adults. For young people to thrive in their schools and communities, they need to feel socially, emotionally, and physically safe and supported. A positive school climate has been associated with decreased depression, suicidal feelings, substance use, and unexcused school absences among LGBTQ students. Going to a school that creates a safe and supportive learning environment for all students is especially important.
I intend to promote a safe and affirming school environment by including positive representations of LGBT people, history, and events in my curriculum and in my classroom library--I want to provide all of my students with stories that both reflect their lives, experiences, and identities and expand their understanding of our diverse world.
We all desire to be seen and to have our experiences validated. Kids who may identify along the LGBTQ+ spectrum need to read about ordinary people - artists, athletes, politicians, students - who are gay, lesbian, or transgender. Your donation will help me provide a small corner of the world where my LGBTQ+ can see themselves represented in the books they read.
