Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students hail from many corners of the world. While some were born and raised generation after generation in inner-city New Haven, CT, others have immigrated to the U.S. with harrowing immigration stories that may very well fill best-selling memoirs one day.
My students are 9th-12th graders who are doing their best to survive and thrive in a world on fire.
My Project
Same great initiative I started on social media - now upgraded to DonorsChoose!
I am seeking books for a robust classroom library, specifically designed for the whole identities of students in inner-city New Haven, CT.
We are living in scary times. School will look completely different this year, and I'm here for it. I'm ready to innovate, differentiate, and downright abolish racist and oppressive systems that are harming my students. I'm starting with decolonizing the books on our bookshelf.
I am a strong believer in choice reading, and restoring the relationship that students have with reading. Oftentimes, my high school students check out of reading because they are forced to read something and/or because they don't see themselves reflected on the page. As a White educator in New Haven Public Schools, it is imperative I ensure that my Black, Brown, and Latino students have access to books that will speak to their lived experiences. This also means including some books in their native language, which is most often Spanish.
Help me fill my shelves with incredible authors of color, including but not limited to: Jason Reynolds, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Tiffany D. Jackson, Elizabeth Acevedo, Ibi Zoboi, and Julia Alvarez.
While students are learning remotely, I will arrange for them to pick up books at the school on designated dates or mail them directly.
I was able to fund the start of this collection through the donations of generous neighbors in my community - all of whom have never met me, but care about our kids. Next, I called upon my family and friends on social media, and wow, THEY SHOWED UP! Now, I am calling upon a community of educators and philanthropists. Help me finish this project and make a profound impact on students for years to come!
