My Students
Each day, I am inspired by the resilience of my students. Approximately seventy percent of the students in our low-income middle school receive either free or reduced-price meals. Despite facing personal struggles and challenges, these students overcome adversity with the support of their peers and teachers. It is not uncommon to see students extending a helping hand and encouraging each other, regardless of race, gender, ability, or age.
My Project
At our school, we celebrate diversity and encourage inclusiveness. In a school made up of various cultures and ethnic groups, it's important for students to find a novel that truly speaks to them. As a first-year teacher, I am grateful to have inherited a classroom library from the previous teachers. However, a majority of the books in my classroom library exclusively featured white characters. This year, I strive to build a classroom library that represents all of my students.
The donations to this project will provide the opportunity for each student in my classroom to feel seen and heard.
By creating a diverse classroom library, my students will not only see themselves reflected in the stories they read but also continue to cultivate a culture of empathy and inclusiveness.
