Representation Matters! Building a Diverse Library
Help me give my students access to a diverse library of books highlighting African American characters and authors. Included in this library set are relevant social justice novels such as Just Mercy and The Hate You Give.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students I reach are full of energy and excitement each day. We have a range of multicultural students ranging from Latino, African-American, Asian-American, and even Ethiopian cultures. Many are English Language Learners (ELL) and often struggle with learning English as it is not their primary language.
Despite their varied cultures, our students bond together through respect for individual backgrounds and beliefs supporting the idea that we are one school with one goal of success.
Our school is considered a Title 1 school and we are 100% free breakfast and lunch as we qualify for that low-income tier. Due to some of the low-income housing around our school, we often have a high transient rate with new students coming into our classrooms every month.
We currently have a "house" system much like the Harry Potter house built on the Ron Clark Academy model. Our students have instilled the ideals of wisdom, creativity, friendship/kindness, and courage from our house system.
My Project
Eventually (probably sooner than later) students will return to the classroom. My Reading classes complete book projects that include Award-winners and Biographical themes. When my students return, I want to have new books targeted at enriching our African American population. Representation matters! They should have more options to choose from so having these diverse books will spark interest and higher success.
The more books our students have access to that highlight strong Black authors and characters the more the way is paved for a better, stronger future for them.
When my students feel represented, they feel connected and engaged. Getting them reading is an ongoing goal and a life skill! Help me build my school library and life long readers.
