The students in my classroom are bright, curious learners. A large number of these students come from single parent working homes, or, families where both parents work full time.
I have been delighted to see them understand and demonstrate advanced social skills such as compassion, empathy, using forethought in their decision making and taking ownership of their own decisions and their own learning.
I truly enjoy watching them as they collaborate and learn from one another in partner work, small groups and in play.
They are like sponges soaking up information and learning at a rapid rate.
My Project
To support and practice reading skills, every single day, the students are given 30-40 minutes to read-to-self. These hand chosen books are being requested for this special independent reading time.
Children need books that are about them.
They need books that say "you belong here and this is about you".
These books are right at the reading level of my readers, and the topics are age appropriate and relatable. I believe these books will inspire engaged reading for read-to-self time.
They need books that are interesting and fascinating and contain adventure and conflict and represent the good things about humanity.
