I am a Special Education Teacher in a low-income/high poverty school with nearly 700 students in grades Pre-K to 6th. Eighty-four percent are high needs. Fifty-eight percent of our students are economically disadvantaged, thirty-four percent are students with disabilities and forty-eight percent are English Language Learners. Our school houses numerous programs for children diagnosed with Autism. As you can see we are a community of diverse learners.
My students, who are all diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom.
They are very kind, caring, enthusiastic and eager to learn. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things exciting and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences that will help them believe in themselves and be successful.
My Project
Back to school shopping is an exciting time for little ones but due to circumstances beyond their control, my students are not able to supply most of the basics they need when a new year begins.
My students need Crayola Dough, pencil boxes, Elmer's All Purpose School Glue Sticks, and manipulatives for independent play in order to start school with the basic necessary tools.
Students learn in different ways but for students diagnosed with autism there are other issues that I need to address when designing lessons. Manipulating or playing with Crayola Dough makes sense for my students who tend to learn best tactilely. Modeling dough encourages children's language and literacy, small motor skills, and science and mathematical understandings. We already have most of the supplies necessary for our modeling dough center but need to replenish our supply of dough.
We also need small hands on activities for our school busy boxes and Alpha-Bots, mini games, ChefSlime and wind up toys will help my students with small motor skills and critical thinking skills as well as helping them learn to stay on task for longer periods of time.
It's going to be another exciting year in our classroom and these materials would be beneficial to all my special learners who need adaptive basics that work best for them allowing them easier, more successful, learning experiences.
