Ben Franklin High School located in New Orleans was flooded by the waters of Hurricane Katrina. Students, teachers, staff, parents and hundreds of volunteers from around the United States have helped us to re-open. Our students went through life altering experiences to return to our campus. Two thirds of the students returned though most of their homes were destroyed. Our school plant is still not back in order but we continue to survive. Unfortunately, we lost all our trees and plants. The campus looked like a war zone on the outside until some volunteers helped the students, faculty and parents clean it up and plant some trees. But that was only a beginning. I wish to help the students make our campus a beacon of hope in a neighborhood of destroyed businesses and homes by planting some ornamental trees and bushes in front of the school. Right now the nine trees we planted in May are all that brightens the front of our campus. The experience of giving back to the school and community would be a "real life" social studies experience. We need to purchase Japanese Magnolias, Cypress trees and other appropriate trees and bushes. We need to purchase cypress mulch to protect the new plants. Since the storm, I created an Environmental Club whose members will participate in the planting and all of my approximately 100 social studies class students. Each will have an opportunity to prepare, plant or maintain the plants. This experience of beautifying the community will instill in my students the importance of civic responsiblity within a community plus it will help to "Rebuild New Orleans".
