Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an urban setting/high poverty school. School is just underway and my students are excited, nervous, and curious about Kindergarten. Their enthusiasm continues to grow each and every day and I want to keep this momentum going, but I need your help! For many, they are entering a school setting for the first time. I strive to develop a love for learning and to set them on the path to becoming lifelong learners.
The more I get to know each and every one, the more excited I get about being their teacher.
They are creative, inquisitive, and diverse learners who want to know and understand the world around them.
My Project
Last Spring, I began replacing materials that were lost due to water damage from pipes bursting in a cold spell. Thanks to Ripple, part 1 was quickly funded! I have since moved my classroom and have once again begun replacing those teacher-purchased items; thus bringing me to part 2 of my project.
Materials purchased from your generous donations will include items damaged and also new items I feel my students would truly benefit from.
The books I am replacing, with some additional titles, will help my early learners to explore and engage in the world around them. It has only been a few weeks, but from my very limited English speakers to my most advanced and even independent readers, they all love to be read to. They are always bringing me ‘one more book’ to read and also enjoy ‘reading’ to each other. With titles such as 'You are Friendly', 'What if Everybody did that', and 'The Jacket I wear in the Snow', my students can learn about being a good friend, the importance of making good choices, and can just have fun with silly books while practicing rhyming!
The literacy and math centers will introduce students to literacy and numeracy concepts, helping to build foundational skills. The Numbers and Counting Self-Checking Magnetic Cards will give students guided practice as they become more independent learners. The Alpha-bots and Find the Letter Activity will my help my kindergarten students to gain confidence in recognizing letters as the learn to spell their name and eventually words. The OSMO Kit is not only engaging and interactive, but it also promotes teamwork as students work together to solve problems. These centers are exciting for young learners, which leads to positive experiences with school.
