This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

A day in my classroom is filled with fun and hard work. Students are pushed to their limits in order for them to make as much progress as possible while finding the joy of learning. Throughout the year, I strive to create self-motivated and excited scholars ready to tackle the next grade.

My students are a great bunch of kids.

Over ninety percent of them live below the poverty line but continue to exceed the expectations that society has placed on them having come from the inner-city. Eighty percent of my reading intervention students are English Language Learners. My students struggle a lot outside of the classroom in many areas of life; my classroom is a safe place where my students can find success.

Many of my students do not have access to books outside of school. Students borrow books from my personal library to read at home since we don't have a school library. So many of the books that have been borrowed have been read so many times that they are falling apart! Others that have been borrowed have disappeared into my readers' homes, never to return.

My students are always excited when new books arrive! As the reading interventionist, I feel most effective when my struggling readers beg me for specific titles to add to the library because I know their love of reading is growing! The titles I'm requesting are all those that are currently held together by love, glue, and lots of tape or are those that have disappeared into my readers' homes. Students ask for these books on a daily basis and nothing will motivate them to read like new copies of their favorite books!
