This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is located on the Southside of Chicago and is dedicated to working with students with moderate to severe disabilities ages 16-22. Our school is a transition center that assists students in gaining practical experience in a variety of settings including vocational, independent living and social learning. Students work in their vocational classes at our main campus to gain useful skills and then are able to attend our other campus which offers on the job experience in a variety of settings in our students' communities. Some of the classes we offer are carwash, cafe, retail, horticulture, and custodial. Students also have the opportunity to work at many different job sites within their communities.
The area of art allows my students to express themselves in a new and creative way.
We have just expanded our art program to two classrooms this year and are diving into new forms of art including graffiti, metalsmithing, mosaics, printmaking and much more. Our students find art to be very therapeutic and it allows our students an opportunity to show their friends and family how creative they are.
My Project
We have a student that lost all of his personal belongings and clothes in a house fire over winter break. We are trying to collect some nice items for him to replace some of the items he lost. This student has a disability and is facing a lot of loss right now. He is a big fan of playing games on his computer after school and that was burned in the fire as well as many personal items like his shirts, coat, belts, underwear, pants, and hats. We are trying to replace some of these items for this student. He will be receiving donated clothes from our school but would like to give him some new clothes that are his style to make this time a bit less stressful for him and his family as they rebuild their home.
